I should NOT be someone’s Pet! I am Riley the Genet.
I belong to the Viverridae family. We are medium-sized carnivores, with long bodies and relatively short legs. We Genets range from around 300 mm in length (excluding the tail, which is usually moderately long), to 1000 mm in length. Most of us have relatively small heads with short, pointed or semipointed, erect ears and a relatively long, pointed muzzle. We have medium sized eyes. Most of us Genets have stripes, spots, or bands on our bodies, and our tails are often ringed with contrasting colors. My claws can be retracted. Most of us have perianal (not anal) glands that produce a strong-smelling substance, and sometimes the odor is sufficiently potent to ward off predators. The secretion of these glands is called "civet."
I am a very stealth, nocturnal hunter, usually active from sunset until after midnight. I like living alone and enjoy sleeping during the day. I am in the same family as the mongoose; that’s where I get my graceful speed.
Viverrids are carnivores. I am able to kill by holding down my prey with my very sharp retractable claws, then a quick bite to the back of the neck with my razor sharp teeth makes my prey completely immobile. My sharp claws also make me a very good climber.
Like most exotic animals, I should NOT be a pet. If I do have to live in captivity, I'm glad I am here at Sara's where I get the attention and proper diet that I deserve. Please consider sponsoring me. If you do, you'll hear me purrrrrrrrrrrrrr with contentment!
